MISSION
As an auxiliary of the Greater Milwaukee Urban League, the goal of the Guild is to design fundraising activities and develop volunteerism. This approach enhances the League’s financial potential while promoting the programmatic thrust on both the local and national level.
History
The National Council of Urban League Guilds is comprised of volunteer auxiliaries of the National Urban League. The Urban League Guild was started in New York City in 1942 by Mrs. Mollie Moon to raise funds in support of the Urban League’s mission. Since starting the Guild, the organization has grown to thousands of volunteers in 43 chapters around the country. Throughout its 75 year history, the Guild has played a significant role in the Urban League movement. Guild members are considered to be the heart and soul of the Urban League movement as they fundraise for their local affiliates, contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually and give back to the community in a variety of ways.
The Milwaukee Urban League Guild was organized as an auxiliary in 1970 to support the mission of the Milwaukee Urban League. For over 50 years, Guild members have been actively involved in fundraising to support the Urban League’s programs and services, and assisting with special events and projects. We also play a key role in connecting the Urban League to the community through our volunteer activities.
Who We Are
Our membership includes individuals from all walks of life. We are laborers, educators, entrepreneurs, professionals and retirees. As members of the Guild, we do volunteer work on behalf of the Urban League without the expectation of pay or tangible gain. We volunteer because we care about the community and want to make a difference in the lives of others. Every third Thursday of the month (except July and August) we come together to discuss the challenges facing our community and seek ways where we can make a meaningful impact in areas such as financial illiteracy, job readiness, health and wellness, and youth education. We also promote awareness of the Urban League in the community by participating in volunteer events ranging from feeding the homeless to the Blood Center of Wisconsin annual Blood Drive at Northcott Neighborhood House. Through our good works, we strengthen the Urban League’s capacity to meet the needs of the community it serves.
